Club Membership fees are now due for the year from 1st April 2016 to 31st March 2017.
It has been decided that despite the fact that Welsh Athletics fees have gone up to £17 from £15, that the club will cover this increase and fees will remain at their present level of £40. Cheques of £40 should be made payable to Abergele Harriers and given or posted to Rachel Shipley, Membership Secretary, 12 St Margaret's Drive, Craig Y Don, Llandudno, LL301YD.

Club Membership Fees due
*~*~*~*~*

Club Membership fees are now due for the year from 1st April 2014 to 31st March 2015.
At the AGM on the 9th March 2014 it was decided to keep the fees at their present level of £40.
Please note this includes £15 which goes directly to Welsh Athletics which gives you £2 off all UKA or WA organised races as an "affiliated" runner, and gives you 3rd Party Insurance while racing or training with the club. Please note however that the Club no longer has a Personal Accident Insurance policy for members.
Your Membership fees also give you the usage of the changing rooms in Abergele Leisure Centre on Wednesday, and in fact any other day you choose to run from the Centre. It also includes a meal provided by the Club on the day of the Club Handicap Race, which this year has provisionally been set for Wednesday 25th June.
Cheques of £40 should be made payable to Abergele Harriers and given or posted to Rachel Shipley, Membership Secretary, 12 St Margaret's Drive, Craig Y Don, Llandudno, LL301YD.
Please note; At the AGM it was also decided that there would be a "late renewal" levy of £5 added to Membership fees for members who failed to renew before the 1st June 2014.
The reason for this is that membership numbers at around that time are the numbers that our London Number allocations are based on so it is extremely important that members renew early in the year.
Please also note that if you have not paid your membership fees for the year, you must enter races as "unattached" and may not run in Borders League or Cross Country races for the club.

Harriers men back in Borders First Division

Abergele Harriers men's team were promoted back to the Borders League first division as second division champions after Wednesdays final race. Despite the race itself not counting, the men had already secured the title after a series of superb runs all season. Unfortunately because the last race was voided, the Ladies team were denied the Imrovers trophy that they so richly deserved but there was some consolation with both Carol Willgoose and Chris Birch winning their age categories overall.

Unfortunately there were organisational problems in today's Wrexham Half Marathon with most runners, and all 5 Harriers running the longer 13.7 course rather than 13.1. Important information re Club Insurance
*~*~*~*~*

From the 1st April 2014 there will be an important change to the club’s insurance which you, as a club member, need to be aware of. At present £15 of your membership fee goes directly to Welsh Athletics and this gives you a very comprehensive “Third Party” insurance; i.e. You are covered if someone sues YOU over something that was caused by your running (eg if you ran into a child and knocked them over and injured them, or damaged any property while running). You are covered while racing or training with the club. THIS WILL NOT CHANGE.
However, at the moment £5 of the rest of you membership goes towards a Personal Accident Insurance Policy that the club has, covering people for their OWN injuries. However, as you can imagine, at £5 per person per year, this is a very limited policy and only covers Permanent injury or loss of function or death (e.g. loss of an arm/leg/eye etc). It does NOT for instance cover loss of a tooth, or temporary injury (e.g. broken leg). The club has therefore decided NOT to renew this policy when it becomes due on 1st April 2014. It is important that you are aware of this as you may wish, if you already do not have such cover, to investigate a Personal Injury/Accidental Injury Insurance. If you are doing this you MUST advise the company you are using that you are a runner as many policies exclude running as it is considered a “dangerous sport”.
For the record, please also be aware that most travel insurance policies DO NOT cover running related injuries either, so if traveling abroad and you intend running (even just training), you should inform your insurance provider.

Castles Relay 2014

The club is hoping to enter a team into the 2014 Welsh Castles Relay which will take please in June (the weekend of the 7th/8th). The club will only enter a team if 20 members commit to in beforehand. It will cost members £10 each (plus accommodation if staying overnight).
In order to book your place on the team please give Mark your £10 as soon as possible as only those who have paid will be considered to have committed. If Mark is unable to secure 20 x £10, a team will not be entered and you will receive your money back, but hopefully this will not happen and members will be eager to participate.
Anyone who has not previously taken part in “The Castles”, please ask Mark or Dave for details or log onto http://www.lescroupierswcr.org/

*~*~*~*~*
Gun Time V Chip Time
*~*~*~*~*

At a recent Committee Meeting the old issue of Clock and Gun time was once again discussed. As has been explained in the past, for statistical purposes, until such time as all races are chipped, the only way that the statistics can be recorded effectively is with Gun time. This is the only time that can be compared between all races. All prizes in races are given by gun time for this very reason, whether the race is chipped or not (i.e the prizes are awarded on position across the finish line not on position based on chip time which, even at the front of races, is often different).
Therefore the club statistics will continue to be recorded on the website as Gun time.
However, form the 1st January 2014, there will be a new facility on the statistics page for athletes to see their chip times (if this has been provided to Sean or either of the Press Secretaries). Chip times, although available for individuals to see, will not be those used when analysing individual, race or club statistics.

The overall mens’ team winners were Eryri Harriers, with the Ladies of Colwyn Bay AC taking the ladies title. The Spillane & Co Wealth Management Corporate Team Challenge which is also held within the race was won by a team representing CGG.
The club would like to thank Spillane & Co. Wealth Management, Abergele Town Council and the many local firms who once again financially supported the race and helped to make it such a success.

"Gun time" V "Chip time"
*~*~*~*~*

I am aware that several members are confused as to which time is used for out stats page. Unfortunately for statistical purposes we have always used "gun time" as opposed to "chip time". This is what is universally accepted for statistical purposes as it is the only thing that can be compared from one race to another as all races dont have chips, so unfortunately until all races have chips we have to use the gun time for our stats. There are 2 arguements that are used, 1) is as above ie not all races have chips and 2) all prizes are given on gun time so everyone else should be too (clearly the first person across the line wins the race, but if someone from the back actually ran a faster time on the chip but came in second he would not be given the victory, first person across the line wins irrespective of chip time, so it has to be the same for everyone.
I agree it is frustrating and personally it makes no difference to me what people consider their time as for their pb etc , that is entirely up to the individual.

Great to have you all on board and a pleasure to be involved in such a great Club, where the club "spirit" is better than it has ever been before. Keep running!

Chris has also been denied a North Wales FV65 Championship record as well because of this. But well done Chris, the whole Club are proud of your amazing achievements.

Beginners Group gets off to a flying start!
*~*~*~*~*

Abergele Harriers Beginners Group got off to a flying start on Wednesday night when 61 people turned up for the free ten week course. The free ten week course, at the end of which time, all “Beginners” should be able to run 30 minutes without stopping, started off with a very simple but enjoyable run /walk program around Pentre Mawr Park. Fourteen Harriers helped out on the night, twelve of whom had recently gained qualifications from Welsh Athletics to lead out the group. Welsh Athletics had recently specifically organized a course for the Club to help establish this new group, and thanks to a Community Chest grant of £590 which partially funded the course, twelve Harriers became qualified and insured. The club are expecting several new members to attend next week, and anyone interested in attending can simply turn up to Abergele Leisure Centre between 6.30 and 6.45 on Wednesday night. The aim of the group is simple to introduce people to running, whether it be for fitness, weight loss or general health improvement, and to show people how much fun running can be. No previous running experience is needed and it doesn’t matter how “unfit” people feel they are, they will enjoy the free ten week course. A spokesman for the club said “it was one of the best days in the history of the club to see so many people out enjoying themselves and learning to enjoy running”. For further details ring Sean on 07774948596 or e-mail Sean@Abergeleharriers.co.uk.

*~*~*~*~*

An Extraordinary General Meeting has been called for Sunday 22nd August 2010, at 6.55pm in the Community House, Cheshire Avenue, Kinmel Bay to consider the following proposal;

It is proposed to remove section 5 b) from the constitution with no replacement.

Section 5 b) reads;

“All club and committee positions can only be held for a maximum of 3 (three) years, and not retaken up by the same person for a minimum of a further 2(two) years. If there is nobody willing to take up a position an EGM must be called.”

The following day, in only slightly better conditions, he set out running from the Pen-Y-Pas and ran over all 15 Welsh peaks that are over 3000 feet, running for more than 27 miles and climbing over 13,000 feet altogether to finish on the top of Foel Fras in Carneddau 8 hours and 48 minutes later. The overall challenge also included over two hours of walking/running in addition to this to get to the start and from the finish, but was all worth while as Geran raised over £500 for Autism. Thanks also to all those who helped to make the challenge possible, including wise wife Angie who supported him in Nant Peris and Ogwen Valley and ran to meet him at the finish, to Alwyn Oliver of Eryri Harriers who helped to pace him up the last section up Carneddau, and Jenny and Islwyn Richards who also helped pacing towards the end, as well as Sue Calvert and Lucy Jones who helped with the sponsorship; a tremendous team effort overall.

North Wales Police Sponsor Race
*~*~*~*~*

The North Wales Police and Community Trust (PACT) was launched in 1998. It is a registered charity. The Trust supports initiatives, particularly those in which the Police are involved, which aim to improve the quality of life by reducing crime and fear of crime in all communites of North Wales.

In 2002 The Community Beat Manager Small Grant Fund was created. This fund is designed to make grants available to CBMs who know best what is needed at grassroots level in communities. As long as an activity or project improves the local community, it is likely to be approved.

Abergele CBM PC Neale Duffy says "The small grant fund is great. It helps local communities with local problems. I am really pleased that I have been able to access the £250 for Abergele Harriers. The cash will go towards the costs of organising their "Slaters 5" race which is to be held on 5th November at 1pm."
