Llanfair Mountain Race 2018

It was quality rather than quantity at today's Llanfair Th Mountain Race with Steven McCormack winning the race in a time of 41mins 19secs, 16 years after he first ran the race as a 13 year old. This was also his first victory in an open road race beating his previous best position in the race, which was 3rd in 2007. Also improving his previosu position was John Jones, who finished in an excellent 51mins 7secs for second position, an improvement on last years 3rd. First lady home was Helen Cronnin in an excellent 56mins 38secs.

Llanfair Mountain Race 2014

Twenty Five runners competed in this year’s Llanfair TH Mountain run which is organised by the Llanfair TH Sport and Recreation Association in conjunction with Abergele Harriers, but what it lacked in numbers it certainly didn’t lack in quality. The race was run in blisteringly hot conditions this year, making the already tough course, even tougher. Eight of the starters were Abergele Harriers, bolstered by the fact that the race was in this year’s Club Grand Prix.  The race was won in a course record time by Dean Longley of Prestatyn RC in a brilliant time of 36mins 50secs, ahead of David Alexander of West Cheshire AC in 39:19 and Adrian Williams of Eryri Harriers in 42:17. Prestatyn RC also won the ladies race with Abbie Cheetham finishing in 49mins 30secs just fifteen seconds ahead of club mate Sian Beck in 49:45. The only Harrier to get on the podium was Chris Birch who finished in 52mins 49secs for 3rd female overall. First Harrier on the day was Jodi Waters, who finished a strong 4th in 42mins 41secs, just ahead of John Edward Morris in 43:06 for 5th and Rob Armstrong, returning from injury, in 44:04 for 6th overall. Mark Mayers also ran extremely well finishing in 44mins 19 for 8th with Darren Battersby managing to beat the fifty minute barrier with a very strong run of 49mins 51secs for 15th overall. With Chris Birch 3rd lady in 17th overall, Lucy Curtis was 4th in 56mins 15secs, while Sue Calvert completed an excellent day for the Harriers with a time or 63mins 44secs for 5th lady overall. The club would also like to wish Brian Robinson who became unwell running into the field, a speedy return to running.

Llanfair Mountain Race 2010

Nine Abergele Harriers were among twenty seven runners to take part in this years Llanfair TH Mountain Race, a tough 10k road race. The race was won in an excellent time of 39mins 9secs by Dean Longley one of a strong team of five from Prestatyn Running Club. Second home was Paul Stinton from Buckley Runners in 44mins 2secs, just ahead of first Abergele Harrier of the day, local man Richard Wilyman, in 44mins 38secs. Keith Elliott, just returning from injury, also ran an excellent race, finishing in 45mins 37secs for 5th position overall, not far ahead of Andy Simpson in 45mins 59secs for 7th. Mark Mayers, improved on last years time by over two minutes, to finish in 47mins 43secs for 10th overall, while Jeni Richards, also improved by over two minutes, but more importantly improved by two positions, to win the ladies race this year in an outstanding time of 49mins 51secs, just ahead of Sian Beck of Prestatyn RC, who was runner up for the second year running, one minute down on last years time, in 51mins 39secs. Third lady home, running the race for the first time, was Abergele’s Chris Birch in a superb 52mins 24secs. Keith Tewkesbury, another Harrier running the race for the first time, finished in 56mins 16secs, for 18th overall, while Peter Hardy was delighted with his first race back in over four months of injury, finishing in 58mins 19secs for 21st. Sue Calvert completed the team in 59mins 36secs to insure that all nine Harriers came home in under an hour, an excellent overall achievement for such a tough 10k race. This years race once again attracted runners from as far away as Stockport with Brian Robinson of Stockport Harriers finishing in 47mins39secs, just unable to catch his wife Ruth, who went off 15 minutes early, finishing in 1hr 15secs 24secs, but managing to stay just ahead of Brian to the line. Next years race will be on Saturday 30th July 2011.

Eleven Harriers were among the thirty runners in this years’ Llanfair TH Mountain Race, a particularly difficult 10k road race. First Harrier home, in third position overall behind the Colwyn Bay duo of Russ Godwin and Billy Hunter, was Keith Elliott with a superb time of 42mins 35secs. Almost exactly a minute further back was Ed Reid, a former winner of the race, finishing in fourth position in a time of 43mins 37secs. Haydn Jones, one of the Harriers who regularly trains on the course, took several minutes off his best for the course, with a time of 46mins 8secs, for 8th position overall. Vernon Pownall also mastered the course with an excellent time of 46mins 51secs for 10th position. Paul Thomas finished 13th overall in a very good time of 49mins 21secs. First Lady home was Vicky Ronald of Colwyn Bay AC in an outstanding time of 49mins 55secs, leading the women home not for the first time. Mark Mayers just missed out on the 50 minute mark, with a superb 50mins 7secs for 15th position, with Peter Hardy just one position further back in a time of 50mins 30secs. Andy Goodson also ran extremely well finishing in 51mins 29secs for 18th position while Jeni Richards was the first Female Harrier home, and third Female to finish, in a superb time of 52mins 16secs (19th overall), with Sian Hall fourth female finisher in 54mins 58secs (24th overall). Just ahead of Sian was Rob Spotswood, finishing in 54mins 22secs for 23rd position overall.

Please note this race is in its 76th year and was traditionally simply a race across the mountain, with a prize only for the first person home, whether male or female. In view of the much larger entry this year and the fact that the race now holds a Welsh Athletics Permit

next year there will be prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd Male and 1st, 2nd and 3rd Female and a memento for all finishers.

Llanfair TH Mountain Race ~ 2008

The "75th Anniversary" Annual Mountain race took place on Saturday in very hot conditions. For the first time for many years the race was permitted meaning that runners could run representing their club. Unfortunately only one Harrier ran this year, Steve Ward, finishing in 1hr 17mins 55secs. The race was won by unattached runner Justin Everley with Russ Godwin of Colwyn Bay AC second. First Lady was Vicky Ronald also of Colwyn Bay AC, while first "local" home was Owen Marshall and first "local" lady was Olivia McHugh.

Llanfair TH Mountain Race ~ 28/7/2007

Four Harriers took part in the Llanfair TH Mountain run this year, a race of just over 10k, with Sean McCormack winning the race for the third time in four years, in a fantastic time of 38mins 37secs, just one second slower than two years ago, but over an extended course. Steven McCormack, was third overall in a very good time of 40mins 42secs, a personal best for the course by several minutes and just forty seconds off the second placed runner, Gary Rees Williams of Menai Track and Field. Russ Godwin of Colwyn Bay AC was fourth in a fine time of 42mins 20secs, with Abergele’s Haydn Jones running a superb race in preparation for the upcoming Race the Train in Tywyn, finishing in 48mins 23secs. Carol Willgoose, Abergele’s fourth runner on the day, was first lady home in a fantastic time for this very difficult course, just behind Haydn in 48mins 41secs, with Vicky Ronald of Colwyn Bay AC second lady home, in 51mins 28secs. Steven McCormack, not content with third position in the Mountain Run, then went on soon afterwards to win the 18 years and under 100m race, on the sports field.

Three Abergele Harriers were among the small field that competed in the Llanfair TH Mountain Race, a 10k road race across the mountain in Llanfair that is always very keenly contested by the Harriers. For the second year in succession the race was won by Sean McCormack, this year in a personal best time for the course of 38mins 36secs. McCormack was pushed very hard in the first half of the race by both Steven Robinson (an ex-Harrier now running with the RAF) and Ed Reid (winner two years ago), but pulled away from them both over the mountain. Robinson did get the better of Reid in the long run-in, the pair finishing in 40mins 17secs and 40mins 36secs respectively. Craig Jones, representing the North Wales Police, was forth, with another Harrier, Chris Arnold in 5th in an excellent time of 47mins 37secs. Other local finishers included Wyn Merion (52.40) and AJ Robshaw (56.27), both of Abergele Rugby Club.
