Round 1 Borders League
Prestatyn, 14/10/2007
Nineteen Abergele Harriers turned out for the first round the Borders Road Running League in Prestatyn. The men’s team, back in the first division this season, posted a fantastic team score of 336 points, one of the best on the day. They were lead home by the in-form John Earlston, with a fantastic 6th position overall, in an outstanding time of 27mins 32secs, for the 5.1 mile course. Borders League Captain Darren Blazier was next, for a very impressive 9th overall, in 28mins 10secs while Tim Cahill produced one of the performances of the day, with a tremendous 28mins 45secs, to achieve his best ever Borders League position of 17th. Sean McCormack was 20th overall in 28mins 53secs, while Dewi Roberts was another Harrier having a fantastic race, just four positions further back, in a time of 29mins 20secs. Gareth Roberts, again running excellently at present, finished in 34th in a time of 29mins 59secs, while Matthew Ashton, running one of his best Borders League races ever, finished in 30mins 33secs and was rewarded with 49th position. Justin McIlveen proved that he can run on the flat just as well as the mountains, finishing in a highly respectful 56th position, while Ed Reid once again showed he is right back on form, finishing in a time of 31mins 18secs, for 64th, just holding off Steven McCormack, who finished just six seconds and one position further back. Grahame Shone ran very well to finish 101st in 32mins 43secs, while the less experienced Haydn Jones finished in just over 33 minutes, for a very pleasing 124th position overall. Carol Willgoose was unfortunately the club’s only female representative at the race, but she certainly left her mark, running a tremendous 34mins 59secs for 152nd overall, in this extremely high quality field. Paul Thomas was just eleven seconds further back for 156th position, while Keith Elliott ran very well for 181st, in a time of 37mins 1sec. Club Chairman Alan Lucas, who unfortunately missed all of last season’s campaign, came back with a bang, finishing in 198th position in 38mins30secs, while the club’s only Borders League ever-present runner John Essary ran an excellent 39mins 24secs for 207th. Club Vice-Chairman Steve McCarten was next in 39mins 59secs for 217th while Stevie Ward, another veteran of several Borders League seasons, finished in 265th position. The men’s team score of 336 was the clubs seconds best overall score ever, but managing to get ten home out of the first 65 across the line was in-fact a club record, beating the previous best of ten home in 72.
