Sixteen Abergele Harriers joined over 300 runners in the opening round of the Grand Prix Express North Wales Cross Country League held at Colwyn Bay on Saturday 9th October. The women, running 2 laps of the course were led home by Jeni Richards in 21m 33s for 45th position and Carol Willgoose in 22m exactly for 53rd position.

Christine Birch ran 22m 24s for 59th position with Sian Hall just behind in 22m 57s and 68th position. Cross Country manager Sue Calvert finished in 24m 16s for 86th position with Cheryl Richards finishing in 26m 36s for 102nd. Lucy Jones, running 28m 22s for 113th and Sonia Wignall, running 29m 40s for 116th rounded off an excellent women’s team performance.

The men, running 4 laps of the course, were led home in a sprint finish by cross country newcomer Richard Wilyman running 38m 44s for 71st position just ahead of Richie Lee in 38m 46s for 73rd and Tim Cahill in 38m 53s for 78th. Ed Reid ran 41m 24s for 100th position with Graham Shone finishing in 42m 47s for 117th.

Anthony Howe, another Harrier making his cross country debut ran 43m 40s for 130th. Paul Thomas finished in 143rd while Rob Spotswood completed a great men’s team performance with a run of 50m 25s for 168th.The runners would like to thank all of you who came to cheer us on…Alan Lucas, Stevie Ward, Dave Edwards, Vernon and Christobelle Pownall, Geran, Angie and Medi Hughes, Anwen Begley and Dominique Jones…really fantastic support and very much appreciated!
