Majestic Travel Cross Country League.

Round 5; Oswestry, 9/2/2008.

On Saturday 21 Harriers travelled to the final round of the Majestic Travel North Wales Cross-Country League, where the Ladies became Second Division Champions, the Men First Division Runners up and Veteran League bronze medallists and four members won individual prizes.

Geran Hughes was first man home for the Harriers over an extremely wet and muddy 5.8mile course, finishing in 35mins 49secs for 15th on the day and securing third position overall in the MV40 category. Cross-Country Manager Sean McCormack was next in 36:53 for 24th while Dewi Roberts continued his recent fantastic cross-country form finishing in 37mins 41secs for 29th, with Fell running specialist Justin McIlveen not far behind in 38:12 for 34th. Tim Cahill and Gareth Roberts battles all the way finishing in 38:31 and 38:34 for 37th and 39th positions, with Cahill having the added bonus of securing 3rd MV45 overall. Steven McCormack proved he’s on the way back, with a 39:15 for 51st position, securing 2nd U20 for the season, while Matthew Ashton proved his excellent team spirit, running despite injury, and finishing in a superb 39:42 for 58th. Ed Reid ran probably his best race of the season, finishing in 40mins 11secs for 63rd, while Haydn Jones continued his recent improvements with an excellent 44mins 44secs for 105th. Alan Lucas proved he’s right back where he belongs with a wonderful 48mins 9secs for 124th, with the injured Rob Spotswood just behind in 48mins 36secs for 126th. The doubly victorious Men’s team was completed by Steve Ward in 711mins for 143rd position, giving the men’s team an overall score on the day of 178 points.

The ladies team were lead to the second division championship title, as they have been for most of the season, by the on-form Carol Willgoose, who finished in 14th position on the day and secured second position in the FV45 category. Angie Hughes also had a tremendous race, finishing in 24mins 44secs narrowly missing out on an overall prize, despite beating prize-winners on the day. Alex Dutton made her debut for the club finishing as third counter on the day running excellently throughout, while Allison Guillemin and Sue Calvert had their own personal duel, Guillemin coming out on top by one position on this occasion. Sonia Wignall and Lucy Jones again ran closely with only one runner separating them at the finish, while Julie Jones made a very welcome return to the cross-country scene completing a historic day for the ladies, seeing them become second division champions in only their third season in the league.
