It was another outstanding team performance for Abergele Harriers in the second round of the Majestic Travel Cross Country League, with fourteen members making the trip, resulting in the men’s team consolidating their safety in the first division and the ladies also producing a superb team performance. In the absence of ladies Cross-Country Captain Angie Hughes through illness, the team was lead home over the difficult two lap course by Hilary Jaques, who finished in an excellent 39th position. Second home, improving her previous best position by five places, was Susan Calvert, with ever reliable Julie Jones completing an excellent team performance in 75th, giving the team a very creditable 169 points overall.

First home for the men, over four laps, was Club Captain Geran Hughes in an excellent time, for 24th position, closely followed by Cross-Country Captain Sean McCormack, in 36mins 28secs for 28th. Ever improving Steven McCormack continued his relentless pursuit of his father, this time finishing only fourteen places further back, in a time of 37mins 34secs, for his best league position ever of 42nd. Tim Cahill proved that he is back on form, finishing 50th, in a time of 38mins 25secs, his best finish for many years. Justin McIlveen once again demonstrated his strength in the cross-country discipline, by finishing 25 seconds ahead of arch-rival Matthew Ashton, the pair finishing in 38.25 and 38.40, for 53rd and 59th respectively. Paul Ross, running his first cross-country race for the club, ran an excellent 45mins 10secs, for 124th, with Dave Edwards not far behind in 48mins 43secs, for 136th. Stevie McCarten had a superb sprint finish for 148th in a time of 50mins 52secs, while Stevie Ward completed a very satisfying day all round, in 55mind 54secs. The men’s result of 256 points, was the 5th best of the day out of 22 teams competing and keeps them very safe within the first division, having only just been promoted from the second division this season.
