Grand Prix Express North Wales
Cross Country League.
Round 3; Bangor, 22/11/2008.
Eighteen Abergele Harriers travelled to Bangor for the third round of the Grand Prix Express North Wales Cross Country League which was run in bitterly cold conditions over a lengthened and very muddy 7.25 mile course. With Cross-Country Captain Sean McCormack unavailable for the race, Tim Cahill lead the team home brilliantly, finishing in an excellent 50mins 2secs for 28th position overall. Club Captain Geran Hughes proved he is recovering well from injury with a very well times race, steadily working his way up the field to finish in a superb 36th position, with Dewi Roberts not far behind in 40th. Matthew Ashton showed that his triathlon training has paid off well with an tremendous 46th position, while Gareth Roberts fresh from in exploits in Preston last week where he finally broke the hour for ten miles, finished very well in 53rd. Justin McIlveen, making his first appearance of the season for the club showed he hadn’t lost any of his appetite for “the country” by coming home in 68th position, while Keith Elliott had another fine run, finishing in 56mins 41secs for 96th. Grahame Shone finished in 58mins 19secs for 110th, while Ed Reid, just off a plane from the USA still managed a fantastic 131st position despite the jetlag. Dave Edwards, in 137th, Alan Lucas in 157th and Steve Ward in 157th completed an excellent team male team performance with a very satisfying score of 271 points, the best this season, unfortunately marred by the fact that Josh Dixon, for the second time in this campaign, got injured and was unable to finish.
Meanwhile the ladies fielded a team of five runners all running very well. The team was lead home by the inform Angie Hughes in a fantastic 25mins 23secs for 57th overall in the race, which also included the under seventeen men’s runners. Sue Calvert also ran fantastically well to finish in 78th overall while Lucy Jones and Sonia Wignall had their usual very close race with Jones just coming out on top on this occasion as they finished in 91st and 92nd positions respectively. The team was completed by Annette Jones, making her first cross-country appearance this season, and running extremely well not far behind in 94th.
