Round 6 Borders League

Deeside, 15/3/2009

Sixteen Abergele Harriers, including two female members, travelled to Deeside for the penultimate Borders Road Running League race, run on this occasion over a very tough 4.4 mile course. First lady home was Jenny Richards, returning to racing after a four month absence, and putting in an excellent performance to finish in 35mins 53secs. Paula Maguire, one of two Harriers making their debuts for the club, also ran very well, finishing in 40mins 49secs, demonstrating outstanding potential for the future. First Harrier on the day was Sean McCormack, running an excellent 25mins 34secs for 24th position and just managing to hold off fellow MV45 Tim Cahill, who finished in 25mins 51secs, for 29th. Neil Brambles, running his first Borders League race for the club, also performed superbly, finishing in 27mins 37secs for 76th position, with Steven McCormack not far behind in 99th position in a time of 28mins 40secs. Grahame Shone proved he is right back on form finishing in 29mins 20secs for 111th, while Keith Elliott showed that his London Marathon training is clearly well on course with a tremendous 29mins 36secs for 117th. Vernon Pownall once again ran superbly finishing in an outstanding 30mins 58secs for 141st; with Mark Mayers just 40 seconds further back in 31mins 39secs for 160th. Dave Edwards, another Harrier well on target for London, finished very well in 32mins 19secs for 170th overall, while Peter Hardy ran an equally impressive 33mins 54secs for 194th. Club ultra-specialist Alan Lucas proved he can adapt equally well to the shorter distances, finishing in 34mins 22secs for 202nd, while Andy Goodson, the second Harrier to make his club debut on the day, ran a superb 36mins 8secs for 22nd. Before the race John Essary  was presented with the Captain’s Merit Award for 2008, having not missed a single Borders League Race for the club since the club joined the league nearly eight years ago, and finished the day in style with a time of 38mins 40secs for 237th. Jonathan Perry made a welcome return to racing after an absence of over twelve months, and ran tremendously well to finish in 40mins 16secs for 240th position.
