Majestic Travel Cross Country League.

Round 4; Wrexham, 12/1/2008.

Nineteen Abergele Harriers travelled to Wrexham for the penultimate round of the Majestic Travel Cross-Country League, with both ladies and men’s teams producing excellent performances to maintain strong positions in their respective divisions. The best performance of the day came in the Ladies race  where Carol Willgoose ran an outstanding race to complete the new, slightly longer course, in a time of 21mins 24secs, for second FV45 on the day and keeping her very well in contention for individual honours in her age-category. Angie Hughes also produced an excellent performance, finishing in 23mins 5secs, for one of her highest finishing positions. Sue Calvert, the only ladies every present for the last two seasons, again ran wonderfully well completing the course in 26mins 13secs, while Cheryl Richards, gaining in confidence since her victory in the club handicap race six days previously, finished in a tremendous 28mins 39secs. Lucy Jones and Sonia Wignall, both new to the discipline this season, but both running their third cross-country race, ran close to each other the whole way around, finishing in 29mins 53secs and 29mins58secs, respectively.

The men were led home, as they have been all season, by Club Captain Geran Hughes, in an excellent 32mins 9secs for 25th position overall, a superb time for the tough 5.2mile course. One of the best men’s performances came just behind Hughes, where Dewi Roberts produced his greatest ever cross-country race, to finish in 32mins 32secs for 29th. Not far behind was Cross-Country Manager Sean McCormack , in 32mins 56secs, with Gareth Roberts hot on his heels, in 33mins 5secs for 37th, again probably his best cross-country performance to date. Matthew Ashton and Steven McCormack once again produced an excellent duel, with Ashton coming out on top finishing in 34mins 18secs and McCormack just seven seconds further back. Ed Reid ran a very steady 35mins 19secs for 73rd with Grahame Shone only two positions and four seconds behind him, an improvement of two minutes of last years time. Haydn Jones paid the price for going off a little fast at the start but still finished very strongly in 39mins 20secs for 137th just two positions and four seconds ahead of ever-improving Keith Elliott. Rob Spotswood, soon to move up an age-category, ran a tremendous 40mins 21secs for 147th, while Alan Lucas, continued with his recent excellent form to finish in 43mins 8secs for 158th. An excellent day’s work for the Harriers was completed by Stevie Ward who finished in 173rd overall.
