Wallasey (Birkenhead), 8/2/2004 .

A 17 strong team of Abergele Harriers travelled to Birkenhead Park for the 4th round of the Borders Road Running League and, despite very windy conditions, the Harriers produced the overall winner, 3 personal bests, and both ladies and men’s teams  stretching their leads at the top of their respective divisions. Round 5 Borders League

Helsby, 29/2/2004.

17 Abergele Harriers travelled to Frodsham for the 5th round of the Borders Road Running League, hosted by Helsby, with excellent performances all round, further extending the men’s team lead in the second division and maintaining the ladies powerful challenge for the first division title. Once again Simon Shiels, who next week travels to Ireland to represent Wales in the Ballycotton 10 mile road race, romped home, leading almost from the start, to finish nearly 2 minutes ahead of his nearest rival, in 31 minutes 39 seconds for the challenging 6 mile course. Second Harrier on the day, gaining his highest ever Borders League position, was Sean Mc Cormack whose 34mins 48secs earned him a very impressive 13th position. John Earlston, recovering from illness, was next home in 35mins 33secs (21st), just ahead of Darren Blazier in 35mins 48secs (26th). Just 2 seconds behind Darren was the club’s newest recruit, Steven Robinson in 39mins 50secs for 29th position. At only 20 years old, Steven is definitely one to watch out for in the future. Simon Jones, continued his excellent run of form finishing in 36mins 23secs for 35th, with Ed Reid only 30 seconds behind in 45th position. The male team was completed by Mike Powell 38.54 (87), Grahame Shone 39.54 (101), Nike Hobday 40.10 (107), Matthew Ashton 42.08 (126), Mike Nolan 43.38 (144) and John Essery 46.51 (175). The men’s overall score of 465 further extended their lead in the second division, all but guaranteeing them promotion, with only 2 races to go.

The ladies team also competed very strongly with Kristy Stephenson first home in 42 minutes 32 seconds to maintain her overall 3rd position in the individual FV35 category. Next in was Hillary Roderick in an outstanding 43.52 pushed all the way by Debbie Clift, in her first Borders League race, only 4 seconds behind, running superbly. Pam Grant completed the team powering home in 47mins 58secs, keeping the ladies first division title hopes alive.

Round 6 Borders League

Wirral AC (Hoylake), 28/3/2004.

A team of 13 travelled to Hoylake for the penultimate round of the Borders Road Running league on Sunday, but the day belonged to John Essery, who became the only member of the Club to have appeared in every Border League fixture since the club joined the league 3 years ago. John rose to the occasion with an excellent performance gaining one of his highest ever positions, 136th, in a time of 47mins 8secsThe presence of 3 ladies in the North Wales squad resulted in a depleted ladies Border League team but excellent performances were achieved by Eleri Bacon  in 47:54 and Meinir Huws, running her first race for the club, in a tremendous 55:14 for 179th. The men maintained their dominance of the second division with Simon Shiels easily winning the 6.1 mile race in 32mins 22secs, an excellent time considering the strength of the wind in the second half of the race. Not far behind, gaining 9th on the day and extending his lead in the MV40 category overall, was John Earlston in 35mins 2secs. Also beating the 36minute barrier was Sean Mc Cormack in 35:53 for 18th, with Simon Jones 37:24 (39th) and Ed Reid 37:38 (43rd) coming home close. Another outstanding performance came from Mike Hobday, next home in 40:14 for 72nd position, 35 places better than in his last league race, while Matthew Ashton’s 42:18 for 93rd was his first sub-100 league finish. Roy Evans in 44:17 (115th), Mike Nolan 45:43 (129th) and Steve McCarten 47:20 ( 138th) completed the team, earning the men’s team an excellent total of 655 points, extending their lead at the top of the second division with only one race left on Friday the 7th May in Wrexham.
