A team of five women and twelve men travelled to Wrexham for the penultimate round of the Majestic Travel North Wales Cross-Country League with the highlight of the day being Steven McCormack’s last 400 meter dash to the line, which saw him improve his race position by seven places and added his father, Sean, to his list of recent conquests, finishing in a superb time of 33mins 24secs for 29th overall, with Sean finishing ten seconds and six positions further back. First home on the day was Club Captain, Geran Hughes, just ahead on McCormack junior, in 33mins 11secs for an excellent 24th. Justin McIlveen once again proved his power in this discipline, finishing in a fantastic 59th position, with Tim Cahill just behind in 65th. Matthew Ashton, still recovering from recent injury, was very pleased just slightly further back, with a time of 36mins 11secs for 71st, with Ed Reid also continuing his recent return to form by finishing in 36mins 54secs, for 78th. Grahame Shone was less than a minute further back in 37mins 49secs for 94th, while Paul Thomas (cross-country debut) and Emyr Evans who were both returning from injury, surviving the ordeal extremely well finishing in 105th and 118th respectively. Seasoned cross-country campaigners Rob Spotswood and Dave Edwards completed an excellent team performance in 126th and 138th positions, giving an overall team score of 283, which all but guarantees the men continued first division status again next season.

For the ladies Angie Hughes made it a unique double for the family, when, like husband Geran, she lead the ladies team home with a fantastic run, gaining her highest ever league position of 37th. Alison Guillemin, deep into her preparation for the London Marathon, was next, finishing in 57th, while season ever-present Susan Calvert, also ran outstandingly well, rewarded with a 61st position. Annwen Begley, making her debut on grass, had an excellent run, finishing in 72nd, just ahead of experienced cross-county runner Julie Jones, completing a very solid ladies team performance, in 73rd. Both teams will be hoping for a good turn-out for the final race of the season in Oswestry in three weeks time.
